Book Clubs...

Does anyone else join book clubs? I love books, I don't read nearly as much as I used to, or rather I don't read books nearly as much as I used to, but mainly because so many of the things I like to research are easier to do online. So anyway, I got something in the mail today to join:

the History Book Club...

Four books for $1 each plus shipping, which was $11.71, so in a few weeks I'll have:

*1776 (which I've heard was pretty good, forget who told me, think it was Titus)

*The Greatest Presidential Stories Never Told (looked interesting)

*The Great Warming (actually have been doing research on global warming, so might come in handy :)

*The Dangerous Book For Boys (how to make all sorts of things that appeal to boys, I'm sure Carolyn will be thrilled. Not sure what the book has to do with history, but I'm sure Chance and Tanner will love it!)

So if anyone else wants to join and didn't receive the mass mailing in the mail, let me know and I'll send you the code.

I've always wondered how the various book clubs even stay in business... I RARELY purchase anything beyond the initial offer, because most of the book clubs have the worst databases in the world and usually send me the same offer to join two or three times a year, stunning really! Seems like I have joined the History Book Club in the past, yet it still let me join again, and I've had the same e-mail address for about 8 years and the same address for about 7 years, so yeah, wow!

yeah, i signed up for that same deal about a year or so ago. 1776 was a good book!

I almost got that book! Then opted for that book for Chance and Tanner as I knew I might not get around to actually reading it for a year or so... :)

I STILL haven't started 'World Without End', not to mention about a dozen or more books I've purchased in the past year... Oh well, nice to have them on hand for when I'm ready for a good book! :)

We used to join so many book and CD clubs, but then after the two years they always want you to buy your 2 or 3 books at full price and that kicks our rear. So we cut ourselves off from joining anymore. :)

We have the Dangerous Book for Boys, and we want to get the Daring Book for Girls. It's awesome - teaches them ALL sorts of things and makes it interesting for them. My kids love it (the girls too, even though it *says* for boys).

We have so many books, many of which haven't been read by one or both of us - but they're there when we're ready for them! :)

The beauty of this one, there is no obligation to buy anything else! Which is why I was wondering how they even stay in business... :)

I think most of those clubs stay in business with the monthly selection. A lot of people just let them charge their account for the monthly selection and never remember to reply. I ended up with 'Brother Bear II' because I forgot to respond to the monthly selection on the Disney Movie Club - and paid like 22 bucks for it! lol!! (I could have sent it back and been refunded, but that seemed like WAY too much of a hassle).

Any of the clubs that 'automatically' send books, I always send them a letter letting them know that I don't want them, and if they send them, I won't pay for it, and if they want it back, come get it... I've gotten a lot of free books that way... :)

I never give my credit card out to companies like book clubs btw... So they can't charge me for books I didn't order... Of course that is why I send them the letters, don't send me books I don't want, if I want one, I'll order it...

I LOVE book clubs! But I am sure we are talking about TWO DIFFERENT KINDS!! My preference: the one where you and your friends choose a book, you have a month read it, you get together at the end of the month, spend no more than 5 minutes talking about the book- the rest gossiping and having a great time!! :D

But, I do know that Titus is a big fan of the History Book Club! :D

LOL! Yeah, I prefer reading a book by myself, with perhaps a massive bowl of popcorn and peace and quiet! If I think it is a good book, I might mention it in passing to others... :)

I've never done a book club like that Jackie. I think I'd like it though!

Yum... that makes me want to go get some popcorn, Matt.

I LOVE popcorn! I'm sure the way I make it though is not very good for me, but I don't care! I also eat massive quantities of it when reading a book, but hey, I enjoy it! :)

About Global warming - this was an interesting video, great global warming swindle. It was done by channel 4 in Britain I believe. It has been a while since I saw it, October I think but it was informative.

I didn't get the link there Timberly...

I think I may have been a member of that very book club a couple years ago.

I just bought some popcorn last night. I've recently stopped eating bread, crackers, pasta, etc. So popcorn is one of my last pleasures. It's so good.

Petra - Remember that fantastic summer when we sat around eating popcorn, drinking coke, and watching Friends, all day, every day. Ah, how I miss the good ole days. Mayhaps you should move back here so we can have them once again?

Here's a question, when having popcorn, do you make your own or go the microwave router?

Andrea said...

Mirowave all the way.

Matthew said...

LOL! I go that way more often now, but I MUCH prefer to make my own! Popped on the stove with plenty of oil, then salt, salt, salt... Yummy!!

Ah, those were the days Andrea. I'll be in TN before too long... but I won't be moving to Atlanta. :)

And I always use microwave popcorn. Preferably Orville Redenbacher's movie theater butter flavor!! :)

That's my favorite kind of microwave popcorn when I don't feel like popping it myself! Which lately is more often than not! :)
